Heading for Tangalle, Sri Lanka: an unforgettable journey in 4 days!
Day 10: From Tangalle to Hiriketiya, a scooter ride along the Sri Lankan shores!
We are now used to the traffic, so this morning we rented scooters to feel even freer.
Here, you can rent a scooter for €6 a day. The helmets are not suitable for children, but you turn a blind eye to that and tell yourself that everything will be fine.
After a 20-minute scooter ride from Tangalle, we make a first stop on the pretty peninsula of Nilwella Beach, which connects Blue Beach Island to the mainland. Nilwella Island is ideal for explorers looking for a haven of peace. When we arrived, there were barely 5 of us on the beach. Take the time to go around the island and spend a beautiful day in the sun.
We ended the day with a sublime sunset .
Day 11: Sun, sand and surf: discovering Hiriketiya and Dickwella Beach!
Today we are leaving again by scooter to enjoy two beaches that we have often heard about: Hiriketiya and Dickwella beach.
Hiriketiya Beach is a perfect spot for beginners in surfing, like us. This pretty beach is a bay sheltered from the wind with small waves and a nice regularity.
On the beach, there are plenty of board rental companies and also surf teachers. For a first time, it's always nice to learn the basics. We really liked the atmosphere of this beach and its format. It has kept all its authenticity despite its great reputation. Surfing is really a great activity for families , especially with children who have a good natural balance.
After lunch, we took the scooters to go to the big beach of Dickwella. Here, the atmosphere is different. There are lots of bars, feet in the sand . Further north, there are hotel complexes hidden by the palm trees that line the beach.
On this long beach, we loved the roots atmosphere , the small waves and the swings in the coconut trees...
Day 12 Turtle Beach, Galle Tour & Family Yoga
Another beautiful day at the beach, we absolutely wanted to show the sea turtles to our girls. We went to Unawatuna Beach . When we arrived, we saw lots of Sri Lankans selling seaweed to feed the turtles! We approached the water, and they were there a few inches from our feet. Beautiful and big sea turtles were swimming around us! Our girls were scared at first, it must be said that sea turtles are really giant and they are not afraid of humans.
The place is very touristy, and I understand why. It is really impressive to see the turtles swimming in their natural environment. I did not like the maliciousness of the people. Despite the signs "do not touch the turtles", many bad tourists allowed themselves to touch and even sit on the turtles...
I felt uncomfortable being mixed in with this crowd. I still recommend coming because it is incredible to observe sea turtles so closely. Our girls loved the experience and understood that they had to be spectators while respecting the turtles.
For lunch, we shared a lamprais, a kottu roti and a coconut milkshake with our feet in the sand. What a joy to enjoy the beach huts, there are everywhere in Sri Lanka.
What to do in Galle?
Let's go for a little walking tour of the fortified city! The tuktuk drops us off at the foot of the ramparts not far from the lighthouse, it's perfect! Galle is really adorable, with its ramparts along the sea which give it a crazy charm! It looks a bit like an exotic version of Saint-Malo. There is even a small beach at the foot of the lighthouse where people can swim. The walk is pleasant in the middle/end of the day because the sun is stifling.
We then attended a family yoga class facing the sea in Galle, Sri Lanka. I booked a class online with Yoga with Asiri , a perfect experience for a family activity. An ideal experience during rainy days in Sri Lanka.
This one hour private class was a unique experience , combining calm, relaxation and family fun. The classes are simple and suitable for beginners. They are also perfect for children .
Day 13 - The long coconut-fringed beaches of Hikkaduwa
We put our suitcases down on the beach of Hikkaduwa. We booked a hotel with a swimming pool on the beach. Here everything is affordable so take advantage of it.
The beaches are long stretches of sand bordered by palm and coconut trees.
In Hikkaduwa, there is a beach to see sea turtles . Same impression as the day before in Unawatuna , malicious people and a feeling of unease. It is a spectacle that we have never seen elsewhere so we do not deprive ourselves but we quickly go hunting for porcelains on the beach.
Day 14 - End of the trip and night in Negombo in a hotel with a slide
Another beach day in Hikkaduwa , we swim in the waves and play football on the beach. In the middle of the day, we start our journey to Negombo. It takes about 2 hours of driving, to get closer to the airport.
We slept at the Optimum Residence hotel. It is located 10 minutes from the airport. The establishment offers two swimming pools, one of which has a slide. I let you imagine the happiness and excitement of our girls.
To make our departure even more pleasant, the host prepared a delicious breakfast to take away. The transfer to the airport was included in the price of the night (40€). I really recommend this hotel.
Sri Lanka with our children was an unforgettable adventure. Punctuated by fascinating discoveries , heavenly beaches, authentic encounters with elephants, and precious family moments . From the majesty of the temples to the excitement of the safaris, through the waves of the Indian Ocean, every moment contributed to making this trip an enriching experience .
Sri Lanka has left an indelible mark on our travel memories. We take with us the charm of this diverse and welcoming island.
