Choosing the right mattress for your baby
When you become a parent, the most difficult thing to deal with after your baby's crying is the lack of sleep. Sleeping is vital and in this article we will explain how to choose the right mattress for your child's bed.
Babies sleep a lot, you must not neglect their comfort. Their room is already a real cocoon, for that we trust you. But have you thought about the mattress of their cot?
The choice is as difficult as for your own bed. You will have a wide choice of bedding, foam mattresses, coconut fiber, several fillings available and different sizes.
If you are lost, here are some tips to help you make the right choice.
The right size:
The mattress must be adapted to the size of your baby's bed. Generally, the mattress is purchased at the same time as the bed and at that time, you avoid size issues.
Each bed has its own dimensions, it's up to you to decide which one you will use.
The mattress for a co-sleeping bed measures 83 x 50cm. The mattress for a newborn crib is generally 33 x 72 cm. This small extra bed will be very useful for your child to sleep in your room or in the living room for daytime naps.
The standard dimensions for a baby bed are 60 x 120 cm or 70 x 140 cm. There are two sizes. The classic model of cot for the youngest children is the first, 60 x 120cm.
Foam quality and thickness:
In accordance with NF safety standards, the thickness of the baby mattress must be between 12 and 15 cm. The mattress padding is available in several qualities and materials.
To ensure optimal comfort and spinal support, choose a mattress with a firm density. The density should be 20 to 22kg/m3.
Co-sleeping mattresses are usually made of polyurethane. The foam perfectly adapts to the curves of the body for perfect support of the spine.
Foam mattresses are the most common.
If you are environmentally conscious, this is the wool mattress you will choose. It is recyclable and offers a comfortable envelope to your child. Still in the idea of a 100% eco-friendly mattress, bamboo fiber is a great material. It lets air circulate and prevents allergies. The best of the best in green materials is tencel (made from wood fiber) ideal for babies who sweat a lot.
In terms of budget, you can find models ranging from €50 to €200.
New or used:
You may be lucky enough to already be parents and you want to reuse the mattress of the older child. This is absolutely not a problem, here is our advice anyway.
The figures indicate that a child's mattress has a lifespan of 3 to 5 years. In general, children leave their cots around the age of 2/3 years, so you can easily reuse the mattress for your second without worrying about its comfort.
Choose mattresses with removable covers. This way, you can regularly wash the removable cover at 60°C.
I think you have all the keys in hand to make your choice! Good luck and don't forget that the comfort of your child's sleep is very important. Don't hesitate to add it to your birth list to have it offered to you by your loved ones.
