Day 1&2: Vallon-Pont-d'Arc

The first stage of our itinerary is the beautiful town of Vallon-Pont-d'Arc in Ardèche . It is a gateway to the Gorges de l'Ardèche , where the Ardèche River has carved a spectacular canyon through a limestone plateau. The village takes its name from the Pont d'Arc – a huge natural rock arch.

Canoe group in the Verdon Gorges

The village is known and appreciated as a starting point for canoeing and kayaking in the Gorges de l'Ardèche. Attendance explodes here in summer, which is why we were happy to come in October. The region is incredibly beautiful.

We took the time to discover the village and the surroundings of the Ardèche gorges in the morning and then we set up our camp. In the afternoon we took part in an activity that we have never done before: caving. Our daughters did a Introduction to caving (accessible from 5 years old). It was a first and it was great.

Caving with children

The second day we have rented canoes to sail on the water and bathe in the middle of the gorges. Swimming and contemplation were the only two activities of the day and we enjoyed it very much.

How much time to spend in Vallon-Pont-d'Arc?

With all the activities you can do there, a week would easily be filled. We spent 2 days there and loved it.

Where to stay in Vallon-Pont-d'Arc?

You can camp along the river or stay at a nearby holiday park that caters for families. If you’re looking for something a little more unique, you can stay at Prehistoric Lodge. With its own private beach, a terrace with epic river views, a restaurant and free parking – it’s a great option for visiting the town of Vallon Pont d’Arc.

Distance from Vallon-Pont-d'Arc to Cascade du Sautadet – 36 km and 39 minutes drive.

Day 3: Sautadet Waterfall

We visited the small town of La Roque-sur-Cèze because it is close to an extremely unique place – the Cascade du Sautadet. These are incredible waterfalls created by the Cèze River and a perfect aquatic playground for the day. Come here for the day from Vallon-Pont-d'Arc to experience a natural wonder. Jump off rocks into the river, relax in pools or take a shower under a waterfall. Bring an inflatable if you want to float or a paddle board for the more athletic. We had a great day out in nature with the family here.

Sautadet Waterfall

Another way to enjoy the scenery is to do this fairly accessible 8km hike (2.5 hours) with a height difference of 55 meters.

From the car park of the church of Saint-Michel-d'Euzet and the hiking sign, head towards La Roque-sur-Cèze via rue des Tuchins-de-l'Apparant. At the next milestone, turn left towards the waterfalls.

After the descent, stay on the axis on the small road cut between the vines. Cross the D980 and continue opposite on the dirt road which makes a long curve between vines and undergrowth. At the road turn left.

walk and hike to the Sautadet Waterfall

Where to stay at Cascades du Sautadet?

For the most convenient option for the waterfalls, stay at Camping Les Cascades. This 4-star campsite is literally across the street from the waterfalls and offers a wide range of accommodation, including cottages, lodges and high-end vacation rentals.

Distance from Sautadet Waterfall to Valensole – 172 km and 2.5 hours drive.

We chose to do the road at the end of the day. We stopped in Cavaillon for dinner and cut the road in two. I really wanted to sleep near Valensole, to have a surprise when I woke up.

Valensole

Famous during the lavender season , Valensole is an iconic location in Provence . The Valensole plateau offers a veritable kaleidoscope of lavender blue. Come here in the right season to discover some of the most beautiful landscapes and captivating scents. With 300 days of sunshine a year, Valensole is aptly named the "valley of the sun."

We arrived at night with our van, and what a surprise to wake up surrounded by lavender fields in bloom! It was simply incredible to be able to park our van right in the middle of these fields. We got up with the sun and left early in the morning, amazed by this natural spectacle. After a few photos, we got back on the road towards Moustiers-Sainte-Marie for a little coffee in the sun.

When is the best time to see the lavender fields?

The best time to visit during lavender season is from the last week of June to early August. The peak of flowering is around mid-July – although this can vary from year to year depending on rainfall. You can also find fields of sunflowers in bloom around the same time.

Distance from Valensole to Moustiers-Sainte-Marie – 27 km and 31 minutes drive.

Moustiers-Sainte-Marie

Since 1981, Moustiers-Sainte-Marie has been elected as one of the most beautiful villages in France. It is a commune in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence region and is located at the western entrance to the Gorges du Verdon.

We came here by chance and did not regret it. The small village, filled with pastel-colored limestone houses, is located at the foot of steep rocky cliffs. Many come here to climb the many steps that cling to the cliff to reach Notre-Dame de Beauvoir.

After our breakfast on the terrace, we climbed the 262 steps to reach the famous 12th century chapel. From up there, the view of the valley below is exceptional. Not easy with young children, but we always find a way to motivate them and counting to 262 amused them a lot.

We also tasted a local specialty here – a lavender ice cream incredibly delicious. The best address is The Frosted Star - Place Jean Batiste Pomey Right next to the church square, 04360 Moustiers-Sainte-Marie. Quality ice cream parlor, everything here is homemade, no added coloring or extravagant flavor, as ice cream lovers we really loved this one. The most practical thing is that there is a fountain to rinse children's hands right next door.

The best lavender ice cream is in Moustier Sainte Marie

We slept at Camping Le Moulin which is at the exit of the village going towards the Verdon gorges.

How much time to spend in Moustiers-Sainte-Marie?

We spent half a day there, which was enough to take a walk around the town and go up to the chapel.

Distance from Moustiers-Sainte-Marie to Pont de Galetas – 8 km and 10 min drive.

Verdon Gorges

The deepest canyon in France, the Gorges du Verdon, is located in the heart of Provence. I have been dreaming of coming to discover these natural gems for so long. We were not disappointed!

They were dug over thousands of years by the Verdon River. Today, the gorges can reach between 250 and 700 meters deep, and 6 to 100 meters wide at the level of the Verdon River. The winding road through the cliffs offers a beautiful view upon arrival. Don't hesitate to stop at the Pont de Galetas to take in the full view of the gorges.

The best way to enjoy the scenery of the Gorges du Verdon is to rent a boat or canoe and paddle down the river.

When is the best time to enjoy the Verdon Gorges?

I would say that spring is the most beautiful season to go and admire the Gorges du Verdon. Nature regains its colors and the landscapes are particularly beautiful. The climate is mild, which allows you to fully enjoy hiking and outdoor activities. We also avoid the hordes of tourists from July to August.

September is also a pleasant month in this French canyon.

Where is the best place to take pictures in the Verdon Gorges?

Where is the best place to take pictures in the Verdon Gorges?

The best viewpoint for taking photos of the Gorges du Verdon is the Pont du Galetas – a bridge overlooking the canyon and the river.

This is the entrance where you can access it, and just below you can rent boats and canoes. Arrive early to get a boat so you don't miss out on this experience. Once you're in the canyon, prepare to be amazed. This is the ultimate day trip that you'll never forget.

How long in the Gorges du Verdon?

It depends on what activities you want to do. You can spend a week there and do canoeing, hiking, via ferrata, water hiking or rafting. There are a lot of activities. But you can also see the essentials in a day or two.

Can we take a day trip to the Gorges du Verdon?

Yes of course. You can do it freely by observing the gorges from the heights and then take a 2-hour walk in the gorges. Or you can take a guide for a more complete and informative visit.

Visiting the Gorges du Verdon by car is the only way to go around the entire canyon, which stretches for almost 50 km. The best way to enjoy it is to rent a boat or a pedal boat and go to the heart of the canyon.

Where to rent a pedal boat in the Verdon Gorges?

You will easily find pedal boat or kayak rentals, they are well indicated on the roadside. There is one between the Galetas bridge and Galetas beach.

Can we swim in the Verdon Gorges?

Of course you can swim in the waters of the Verdon Gorges. The easiest way is to swim from your boat when you are sailing on the waters. You will also find footpaths to reach the water but there is no road leading to it.

Verdon Gorges Activity

The second day we wanted to explore the French canyon further by taking part in a underwater hiking which lasted 1h30 to 2 hours, in the Samson Corridor or at Tusset.

We were a small group of 8, we reached the starting point on board a shuttle in about thirty minutes from Castellane. Once we arrived in the canyon, we let ourselves be guided by the current, while having fun: swimming sessions, floating, natural slides, and even jumps for the most daring ! It was an incredible adventure, full of sensations, which really brought our exploration of the Gorges du Verdon to life. The guide was super interesting and taught us a lot about this curiosity of nature. A great activity that combines sport, an exceptional setting and explanations on the river and the flora and fauna.

Other sports activities to do in the Gorges du Verdon

The Gorges du Verdon are a playground immensely rich in activities of all kinds. The place being very touristy, you will inevitably find the activity that makes you dream! Only in summer season.

- Climbing: because it is one of the most beautiful climbing sites in France.

- Via cordata: for thrills and perhaps to discover the discipline.

- Canyoning: the best way to discover the gorges in my opinion.

- Aquatic hiking: a good mix between sport and discovery of the landscape.

- Rafting: thrill and fun time with family or friends.

- Hiking: there are many trails, with or without a guide, you will be amazed.

- Paragliding: the Verdon Gorges from the sky must be sublime!

- Bungee jumping: from the Artuby bridge, you can jump more than 182 meters.

- Mountain biking: many circuits have been set up to explore the Verdon by bike.

Day 5 Around Verdon Gorges

We went to see the turquoise waters of the Verdon at the Sainte-Croix lake. Known throughout the world for this unique color! This is explained by the presence of fluorides and clay in the water. Swimming is of course not allowed in these places for obvious safety reasons.

Don't worry, there's plenty to do with the five lakes of the Gorges du Verdon (Lac de Sainte-Croix, de Castillon, Lac Chaudanne, Lac de Quinson and Lac d'Esparron) and the Verdon River. There's no shortage of places to swim!

Sillans Waterfall

Just 35 minutes south of the Gorges du Verdon, south of Lake Sainte-Croix, is the town of Sillans-la-Cascade. The main waterfall in the village is over 40 metres high. It is very accessible for children and above all it is sublime and impressive. Everything is well laid out, to get there we parked in the town's paying car park, then walked 100 metres on the path that leads to the belvedere. From up there, you have a sublime view of the waterfall. You can't go down to the foot of the waterfall but it is from above that it is the most impressive.

Other sports activities to do in the Gorges du Verdon

After a week full of discoveries and adventures , you will leave the Gorges du Verdon with your head full of memories and a light heart. This family travel will have allowed us to you connect with nature in all its forms: from the mysterious depths of the caves of Vallon-Pont-d'Arc to the majestic peaks of Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, passing through the crystal clear waters of the Verdon .

So happy to have shared great moments with the family, whether it was the first caving exploration with the children, bursts of laughter during pedal boat rides , or even wonder at the lavender fields in bloom. Each stage of this itinerary has been designed to offer a perfect balance between adventure and relaxation , so that young and old can find their happiness. What is important for us when we leave with the children is that the car journeys are not too long.

This stay was a great opportunity to get together as a family, to slow down the pace and fully enjoy the beauties of the region.

When you leave, you take away not only photos and anecdotes, but also a real connection with this exceptional territory . The Gorges du Verdon, with their preserved nature and their peaceful atmosphere, will have captivated our spirit of adventure and strengthened our family ties.

One thing is certain: we have loved this magical week in France in the heart of Provence.
